Getting around Barcelona is relatively easy. The interesting part is understanding why.

You land at Barcelona Airport with a suitcase, a hotel address on your phone and one immediate question: how do I get there?

Then come the others. How do I get to the Sagrada Família tomorrow? Park Güell? The beach? Dinner in Gràcia?

Barcelona has plenty of answers. But underneath them there’s another story. For decades, the city has been changing not only how people move, but the streets they move through. Metro stations have gained lifts. Buses kneel towards the pavement. Road junctions have become parks, and ordinary streets have become green corridors.

It isn’t finished, and it isn’t perfect. But it makes Barcelona an interesting place to ask a simple question: who is the street designed for?

From the airport to the city

Barcelona–El Prat is close to the city, and there are several ways in. Which one makes sense depends mostly on where you’re staying and how much luggage you have.

Aerobús is the simplest option for most visitors heading to the centre. It connects both terminals with Plaça Espanya, Sepúlveda and Plaça Catalunya, runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and lets you put your suitcase on board and sit down. Every bus has a ramp, and wheelchair users can travel without transferring out of their chair.

Get your Aerobús ticket →

The Metro (L9 Sud) serves both terminals and connects with the rest of the network, although reaching most central neighbourhoods means changing lines. It’s the natural choice if you have the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, which includes one Metro journey from the airport and one back. If you’re getting the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, your airport journeys by Metro are already included.

Getting around: use a bit of everything

Barcelona is compact, and that’s one of its great advantages. Its network is also, unusually, still split in two: the missing central stretch towards Francesc Macià has yet to be built.

Walking is how you discover the bakery, square or building that wasn’t on your list. The Eixample grid makes orientation easy. Just remember that Barcelona isn’t completely flat: Montjuïc is called mont for a reason.

Is the Hola Barcelona Travel Card worth it?

If you’re going to use public transport regularly, the next question is which ticket to buy.

The Hola Barcelona Travel Card gives you unlimited travel for one to five consecutive days on the Metro, TMB buses, the tram, the Montjuïc funicular and zone-1 trains, plus one Metro journey from the airport and one back.

Whether it’s worth it depends on how you travel:

It usually makes sense if you arrive and leave by Metro and expect to take several journeys a day across different neighbourhoods. It already includes your airport journeys, so it pays off sooner than you might think, and you never have to think about tickets again.

It may not if you’re staying centrally, love walking and plan only a handful of journeys, or if you’re taking Aerobús to and from the airport. In that case, a multi-journey ticket may be enough.

See the Hola Barcelona Travel Card →

How accessible is Barcelona, really?

“Accessible” is a word tourism websites use far too casually, so here’s what it actually means in Barcelona.

The Metro has lifts at 156 of its 165 stations, which means not every station is ready yet: a few, including busy interchanges such as Urquinaona, Verdaguer and Plaça de Sants, still lack step-free access on some lines. Check the station’s page on the TMB website before you set off; it also shows whether the lifts are working that day. The entire TMB bus network has been adapted for people with reduced mobility since 2007, with ramps and reserved spaces. Trams offer step-free boarding. (Source: TMB)

For the detail (lifts, platform gaps, seating, adapted taxis and what to do when a lift is out of service), see our Step-free Barcelona guide, part of our Barcelona accessible section.

If you use a wheelchair, head for the front of the Metro train. The first carriage has the designated wheelchair space, and the front end of the platform has a raised section to reduce the gap between platform and train. Even so, the gap can still be tricky at some stations, which is worth knowing before you set off.

That’s a lot. But 95% isn’t 100%, and a lift existing isn’t the same as a lift working. So if step-free access matters to you:

Check your stations. Not every station is adapted yet, including some interchanges.

Check the lifts. TMB shows the status of the lifts on each station’s page.

Think about the interchange. Two accessible stations don’t guarantee an easy connection between lines.

Think about the last 500 metres. An accessible journey isn’t much use if the street at the end isn’t.

Have a Plan B. Ramps and lifts are mechanical and occasionally fail. The bus and the tram are often the simplest step-free alternatives: every TMB bus has a ramp, and trams stop level with the platform. For door-to-door certainty, Barcelona has adapted-taxi services such as Taxi Amic that you can book in advance.

The better question isn’t “Is Barcelona accessible?” but “Accessible for whom, and for which journey?”

The city you’re moving through is changing too

Accessibility doesn’t end when the train doors open. It continues on the street, and Barcelona has been rethinking its streets for years.

Superblocks and green axes. Barcelona’s superilles began as an experiment in taking through traffic out of groups of blocks. The idea has grown into a network of eixos verds, green axes where walking, sitting and everyday life come first. The clearest example for a visitor is Carrer del Consell de Cent. Turn off a busy avenue and within a few metres the noise drops. There are trees, benches, café tables and children playing. Cars haven’t disappeared entirely; they’ve just stopped being the main character. Along much of Consell de Cent, drivers can no longer go straight ahead: they’re made to turn off at almost every corner, so only local traffic stays. Crossroads that once belonged to cars have become small squares with benches, trees and space for children to play, and some are designed to soak up rainwater instead of sending it straight into the drains (betevé).

Carrer del Consell de Cent, one of Barcelona’s green axes. Since 2011, neighbourhood groups have been reclaiming parts of it for a library, workshops and community projects, while new green space and housing gradually open it up. Sometimes residents change the city first, and the map catches up later.

A few metres outside a school. You may notice brightly painted spaces with planters, benches and less traffic, usually next to a school gate. This is Protegim les Escoles, Protect the Schools: the idea that the street outside a school shouldn’t be the most dangerous and polluted part of a child’s day. When the bell rings, the space stays, and becomes somewhere to play and talk.

None of this is perfect. Shared surfaces can be harder for people with visual impairments, and pedestrians and bikes still need to know where each belongs. More pedestrian-friendly doesn’t automatically mean fully accessible. But the direction is clear.

A better city for visitors because it was designed for residents

Barcelona didn’t put ramps on its buses so you could have a better weekend. It didn’t reclaim the space outside schools to improve your holiday. These changes are about living here, and visitors simply benefit too.

A lift installed for a wheelchair user is rather useful when you’re dragging a suitcase. A bench someone needs because they can’t walk far feels pretty good after 18,000 steps. A street that’s safe for a child is usually a lovely street to explore.

When a city pays attention to the people who find it hardest to move through, it tends to become easier for almost everyone else.

So walk when you want to discover what’s between the sights. Take the Metro when distance matters. Take the bus when it gets you closer, or when you want to see the city on the way. And on your last day, when the suitcase is packed and there’s time for one final coffee, getting back to El Prat can be just as simple as arriving.

<a
